Horses have been domesticated by humans for over 5,000 years. Some populations have escaped their enclosures and returned to the wild, where they have lived feral and reproduced for generations. One horse species in Mongolia has always been wild.
A domestic horse lives about 25 years. It is estimated that there are about 60 million horses currently living all around the world.
Horses are prey animals. They have their eyes on either side of their heads. This allows them almost 360-degree vision, to better notice a predator sneaking up on them. Horses also have the largest eyes of any land mammal.
Horses can communicate their moods using facial expressions, vocal sounds, and body language. They tend to be quick learners and problem solvers.
